Objective: The current research has been carried out under the title, "Investigation of elementary school teachers' perceptions of the desirable characteristics of a school that supports professional development".
Methodology: This study is based on a qualitative approach in the interpretative phenomenology method; The statistical population was 1704 of all primary school teachers in Urmia city. To select a statistical sample, the purposeful and snowball method of criterion-oriented type was used and it continued until the theoretical saturation of the data and finally after interviewing 15 people (7 men and 8 women) with bachelor's and master's education level in the field (primary education, curriculum planning and educational management) theoretical data saturation was achieved. Information was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the traditional content analysis strategy in a theme-oriented or thematic manner during three stages of open, central, and selective coding.
Results: The results of the research showed that, from the point of view of primary teachers, the characteristics of the school supporting professional development can be defined in the form of 8 central themes (school organizational structure, school management, learning communities, curricula, creative and innovative learning environment, motivational factors, possibility lifelong learning and school as a learning organization). On the other hand, the most important indicators of a school that supports professional development are: school management, school structure with emphasis on school-centeredness and school as a learning organization.
Conclusion: The final result is that, if the officials of the educational system are diligent, we can hope for the role of the school in the professional development of teachers, provided that the basic measures are taken to eliminate the existing limitations and deficiencies.
