Objective: The present study aimed to examine the moderating role of gender in the relationship between occupational burnout and organizational cynicism among employees of Bank Sepah in Ardabil Province.
Methodology: This correlational study employed a quantitative approach. The statistical population included all employees of Bank Sepah in Ardabil Province (247 individuals), from which a sample of 150 participants was selected using stratified random sampling based on Cochran’s formula. Data were collected using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (Maslach & Jackson, 1981) and the Organizational Cynicism Questionnaire (Dean, Cunningham, & Grace, 1998). The reliability of the instruments was confirmed using Cronbach’s alpha (0.87 for burnout and 0.89 for organizational cynicism). Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with WarpPLS version 8.
Results: The findings indicated a significant positive relationship between occupational burnout and organizational cynicism (β = 0.46, p < 0.001). Among the dimensions of burnout, emotional exhaustion (β = 0.41, p < 0.001) and depersonalization (β = 0.29, p = 0.002) significantly predicted organizational cynicism, whereas reduced personal accomplishment did not (β = 0.08, p = 0.27). Additionally, gender did not have a significant moderating effect on the relationship between burnout and organizational cynicism (β = 0.05, p = 0.41).
Conclusion: Occupational burnout is an important predictor of organizational cynicism, and organizational interventions aimed at reducing its components may help decrease employees’ cynicism. Furthermore, gender does not moderate this relationship, suggesting that intervention programs can be implemented without differentiating between male and female employees.
